Despite denials going back to 1945, new information reveals "several" WW2 Japanese "Fu-Go" balloons contained anthrax, while others were suspected of carrying bubonic plague, FBI documents attest
Just incredible work here Jeff. An inarguable tour-de-force.
My wife is Japanese and I love and admire Japanese culture but there is a deep strong streak of cruelty and maniacism in Japan, where we see it in their business culture and in their otaku.
I've known about these balloons my whole life as they had one in the Citadel Museum in Halifax where I grew up. I think that exact same artifact is now in the War Museum here in Ottawa.
Bubonic plague is spread by rats, transmitted by fleas. Anthrax is contracted by inhalation, contact of the spores with the skin or ingestion of the bacteria's spores. Neither spread eople-to-people. Very inefficient bioagent delivered by balloon.
Thanks for your input! I tend to agree with you. From what I can tell, and I wrote about this a bit ago, the Army Chemical Corps (in charge then of US's biowar program) & the Joint Chiefs were not happy with the results of the BW Korea campaign. (See first link below.)
Couple points though: Plague is spread by both fleas and lice, and the latter is now recognized as an important vector of the disease. (See second link below.)
Note that the US used the kinds of fleas that also feed on humans (Pulex irritans), as identified by Chinese entomologists. Also, re anthrax, I think that the primary target of anthrax drops were domestic animals, like cattle. However, the spread of anthrax for inhalational purposes shows intent to infect humans.

Thank you so much, Bill!
