When isolated examples of documentary evidence contrast with a much larger body of historical evidence, and/or the historical record itself is incomplete, what's a reader — or a researcher — to do?
I hope to return to this topic in a future post. The issue of gain-of-function experiments is not as black and white as many people presume. As the article you link to documents, avian flu is a very real
danger, and lately it has spread to other species (cattle) and cause human infection. OTOH, the record of lab leaks and mistakes is not spotless, and that's leaving aside the issue of whether the Covid pandemic issued from a lab leak.
The issue is highly politicized. It will take some thought and careful writing to capture the points I'd want to make on this. Thanks very much for the link and the question!
